Member artists of the Mayflower Chapter of the Association of Traditional Hooking Artists will be in the Studio to demonstrate the craft on April 15 from 6-7pm and April 29 from 3-4pm.
Anyone interested will be able to pull some loops and see what it’s all about.
What is rug hooking?
Rug hooking as a decorative fiber art dates back to the 1800s. At its simplest, rug hooking involves pulling loops of fabric through a backing to create useful and decorative objects. In the old days people used cast off clothing and burlap feed sacks as their materials. Animals and farm life were common themes in the designs, and muted natural dyes were used. Rug hooking has evolved into a varied and sophisticated art form. Wool fabric and yarn are still the most common materials, but you’ll also find silk and synthetics in the rugs in the exhibit, and a spectrum of beautiful colors. Embellishments like needle felting, beads and sequins are sometimes used, and rug themes are as varied as the people who make them.
The library currently has on display a collection of hooked rugs on loan from local artists at the Mayflower Chapter of ATHA (the Association of Traditional Hooking Artists).
