Join us to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this seminal title, a thought-provoking exploration of the impact of World War I.
The New York Times' Dwight Garner wrote about Fussell's masterpiece in February 2025, entitling it "This Book on World War One Changed How I thought About Nonfiction," further claiming that the book "deserves a new generation of readers." That new generation would be YOU.
Our discussion will take place on the 111th anniversary of the early, accelerating, uncertain days preceding the full-on outbreak of war. On August 2 1914, Germany occupied Luxembourg, providing neutral Belgium with a 12-hour ultimatum before marching through their territory to get at France. This book, written in 1975, features details and observations that will surprise even the most knowledgeable armchair historians of the era.
Books will be available for checkout the second week of July.
