Join us for this in-person author's talk which brings to life one of New England?s most haunting maritime disasters.
In 1836, the steamship Royal Tar embarked from New Brunswick heading towards Portland, Maine with a passenger manifest that included exotic birds, two lionesses, a Bengal tiger, and an Asian elephant. In researching her book, author Jane Parks Gardner retraced the Royal Tar’s journey from Saint John, New Brunswick, through Eastport, Maine, and down to the waters off Vinalhaven, where the ship met its end.
Gardner is the author of dozens of STEM-focused books and study guides for learners of all ages. Over the course of her career, she has worn many hats—chemistry professor, high school teacher, editor, curriculum developer, adventurer, and mom. The Wreck of the Circus Ship Royal Tar is her first book of historical reportage. Books will be available for purchase and inscription.
Come meet the author and learn the fascinating story of this ill-fated vessel!
